Oncidium Orchid – Short Care Guide

Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Oncidiums tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid harsh midday rays. Leaves should be light to medium green—dark green may indicate insufficient light.

Temperature:

  • Day: 21–29 °C (70–85 °F)

  • Night: 15–18 °C (60–65 °F)
Intermediate to warm conditions are preferred. Some species enjoy a slight drop in nighttime temperature to encourage flowering.

Watering & Humidity: Keep the potting medium slightly moist. Water thoroughly, then allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Maintain humidity around 50–70%, with good air circulation to prevent rot.

Potting Medium: Use a well-draining mix such as bark, perlite, and charcoal. Repot every 2–3 years or when the medium begins to break down.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer every 2 weeks during active growth. Reduce feeding during cooler months or after flowering.

Blooming Tips: Oncidiums bloom on long sprays, often with multiple flowers. Proper light and a slight drop in nighttime temperature can encourage spikes. Remove spent flowers and avoid overwatering during rest periods.

Notes: Oncidiums are relatively forgiving orchids but do best with consistent care. Avoid letting pseudobulbs shrivel excessively; they store water and nutrients.
