× Howeara 'Lava Burst' 'Pacific Sunrise' is a compact, intergeneric orchid hybrid (genus Howeara: a cross of genera such as Leochilus × Oncidium × Rodriguezia) noted for its vibrant lava-toned flowers — bright yellow to orange base with a red-orange flush and delicate spotting in the cultivar ‘Pacific Sunrise’.
The plant remains small in stature, making it ideal for windowsills or limited‐space collections, and is known for producing gracefully arching flower spikes with many small blooms.
Care Guide
Light:
Provide bright, indirect light — somewhere between what you’d give a Cattleya and a Phalaenopsis.
Avoid harsh midday sun that can scorch the leaves; dappled or filtered light is best.Temperature:
Daytime: approx. 21-27 °C (70-80 °F)
Nighttime: approx. 15-20 °C (60-68 °F)
The hybrid tolerates intermediate conditions well.
Keep away from cold drafts and extreme heat.Watering & Humidity:
Keep the potting medium evenly moist—but not soggy. Do not allow the roots or pseudobulbs to dry out for long periods.Potting Medium & Mounting:
Use a well‐draining mix with fine bark, perlite and possibly sphagnum moss. Because the plant is small and roots are fine, ensure the medium does not compact or stay waterlogged.
Mounting on cork or tree-fern is possible; if mounted, watering frequency will increase.Nighttime: drop to 16-18 °C (60-65 °F)
This hybrid tolerates warm temperatures thanks to its parentage.
Watering & Humidity
-
Water thoroughly when the potting mix begins to dry on top, but don’t let it stay bone dry for long.
-
Maintain moderate to high humidity (50-70%) and good air circulation to avoid fungal issues.
-
If mounted, water more frequently (as mounts dry faster); if potted in a loose mix, allow a brief drying period between waterings.
Potting / Medium
-
Use a well-draining medium such as large bark chunks + perlite + charcoal or an open orchid mix.
-
Because this hybrid is compact, a small to medium pot is sufficient.
-
Repot every 2-3 years or when the medium breaks down or roots begin to crowd.
