Dieffenbachias are very durable plants! As they mature they will naturally shed their lower leaves and grow more of a cane-like stalk. 

Care:

While this plant can tolerate low light, it will thrive in a bright indirect light. They can go about 2-3" dry in the soil before needing a full water. This should roughly be about every 7-10 days, but ensure the soil is dry before watering. When repotting, use a semi-coarse soil medium.
