Tillandsia usneoides, commonly known as Spanish Moss, is an epiphytic bromeliad native to the southeastern United States, Central and South America. It grows as long, stringy, gray-green strands that drape elegantly from trees, fences, or other supports. Despite its moss-like appearance, it is not a true moss—it absorbs nutrients and moisture from the air through specialized scales on its leaves. Spanish Moss produces small, inconspicuous flowers and is valued for its decorative, cascading growth habit.

Short Care Guide

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial shade. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight which can dry it out.

Watering & Humidity: Mist frequently or soak in water for 20–30 minutes once a week in dry conditions. Ensure it dries completely after watering to prevent rot. Thrives in high humidity but can adapt to lower humidity with more frequent misting.

Temperature: Warm to moderate temperatures are best: 15–30 °C (60–85 °F). It is frost-sensitive, so protect from cold below 5 °C (40 °F).

Airflow: Excellent air circulation is crucial, as stagnant air can lead to rot. Hang in an open, airy location.

Fertilising: Optional, but a very dilute bromeliad or orchid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks can promote growth.

Notes: Spanish Moss does not need soil and can be draped over branches, wires, or decorative structures. It grows slowly in dry conditions but can become dense and lush in warm, humid environments.
